Whale Detection & Identification from Aerial Photography

چکیده
The North Atlantic Right Whale is a critically endangered species of baleen whale, with an estimated fewer than 500 individuals living in our oceans [1, 2]. In the interests of science and conservation, it is necessary to track and monitor these animals. Currently, only a few experienced researchers are able to identify and tag individual whales through the use of custom software and this process is extremely time consuming [1, 3]. This project focuses on detecting and identifying whales from aerial imagery using techniques frommachine learning and image processing.

Saving the whales with image processing
At the moment, only 500 North Atlantic right whales are left in the world. To ensure the survival of this endangered species, marine biologists are tracking all of them to know their status and health at all times. However, manual recognition is tricky and very few researchers can perform it on the fly [1]. In this project, we implement a whale recognition system that allows researchers to reli...
متن کاملSize-class Segregation of Bowhead Whales Discerned through Aerial Stereophotogrammetry
Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) summering in the eastern Beaufort Sea in 1983 were measured through aerial stereophotogrammetry. Photos were taken from a turbine Aerocommander 690 with wingtip-mounted, calibrated 35-mm cameras. Photos were measured on an analytical plotter with scale data provided by radar altimeter and focal length of the lenses. Coefficient of variation of known-sized tar...
متن کاملBlue whale calling in the Rottnest trench, Western Australia, and low frequency sea noise
Through January-April 2000 research was carried out off the Rottnest trench to search for blue or pygmy blue whales. A consortium of researchers carried out aerial surveys, boat based studies and acoustical measures. Historical records led us to believe that a Western Australian population of pygmy blue whales (Balaenopteridae musculus brevicauda, sub species of the true blue whale, B. m. muscu...
متن کاملAutomatic Vegetation Identification and Building Detection from a Single Nadir Aerial Image
A novel, automatic tertiary classifier is proposed for identifying vegetation, building and non-building objects from a single nadir aerial image. The method is unsupervised, that is, no parameter adjustment is done during the algorithm’s execution. The only assumption the algorithm makes about the building structures is that they have convex rooftop sections. Results are provided for two diffe...
